Double checked the old barrel connector and that power supply had 10V, so USB wouldn't have helped. Went with a standard 8xAA battery housing instead. Bit of a hassle to charge it now, but still happy.

A battery housing for 4 AA batteries with a 9V connector soldered on top of it and a barrel connector soldered to the two cables coming from the 9V connector.
